The AUGUST Field Notes · Razor Bumps

5 reasons razor bumps keep returning — and how to build a better post-shave routine.

Ingrown hairs, visible inflammation, barrier irritation and lingering dark marks are connected, but they are not the same problem. Here is what happens after the blade passes — and how AUGUST is designed around the complete cycle.

The Problem

Razor bumps are not caused by one mechanism alone.

A close shave can leave curved hair trapped beneath or re-entering the skin. The surrounding irritation can then produce a visible bump, weaken the way freshly shaved skin feels and leave a dark mark after the bump has flattened. An effective routine must address more than the sting immediately after shaving.

Reason 01

The hair can turn back before it clears the skin.

After a close shave, a tightly curved hair may grow sideways and re-enter the surrounding skin. The body reacts around the embedded tip, producing the familiar raised bump.

Salicylic acid helps exfoliate within the oily follicular opening, while glycolic acid exfoliates accumulated cells at the surface. Together, they help keep the hair's pathway clearer between shaves.

How AUGUST approaches it

  • 2% salicylic acid· follicular exfoliation
  • 5% glycolic acid· surface exfoliation

Reason 02

The bump is a localized reaction around the embedded hair.

When the sharpened hair tip penetrates nearby skin, the area can become visibly raised, red and irritated. This is different from a simple shaving nick.

AUGUST combines azelaic acid, niacinamide and centella asiatica to help improve the visible signs of post-shave irritation and support a calmer-feeling skin barrier.

How AUGUST approaches it

  • 10% azelaic acid· targets the appearance of bumps
  • 5% niacinamide· supports the skin barrier
  • 2% centella asiatica· supports calmer-feeling skin

Reason 03

A sharp sting is not proof that an aftershave is working.

Freshly shaved skin can be more reactive to high-alcohol or heavily fragranced products. A product may feel intense without addressing the mechanisms behind recurring bumps and marks.

AUGUST is alcohol-free and fragrance-free. It is designed to remain on the skin as a targeted leave-on serum rather than provide only a temporary cooling or stinging sensation.

Reason 04

The bump can disappear before the mark does.

Inflammation can leave a darker post-bump mark after the raised area has flattened. These marks are often especially visible in medium and deeper skin tones.

AUGUST combines tranexamic acid, azelaic acid and niacinamide in a routine designed to improve the appearance of uneven post-bump tone over time.

How AUGUST approaches it

  • 3% tranexamic acid· improves the appearance of post-bump marks
  • 10% azelaic acid· supports even-looking tone
  • 5% niacinamide· supports the skin barrier

Reason 05

The formula only works as part of a consistent routine.

Using a targeted serum once and abandoning it will not create a dependable routine. AUGUST is designed to be simple enough to use consistently after shaving or during an evening skincare routine.
